The Council for Health and Human Service Ministries (CHHSM) is an “instrumentality” of the United Church of Christ.

Their website notes: “Our 73 corporate members, all affiliated with the United Church of Christ, operate 363 communities and programs for children, youth, families, older adults and people with disabilities.”

The following announcement was made through a recent email:

The Council for Health and Human Service Ministries (CHHSM) is honored to announce our Board of Directors voted unanimously on June 9, 2015 to become an Open and Affirming organization of the United Church of Christ.

At the 2015 Annual Meeting, CHHSM President and CEO Michael Readinger shared his goal to take this bold and faithful stand. We have spent the last few months discussing what it means to be Open and Affirming with our members in one on one discussions and in articles in our Diakonie. Our members are very enthusiastic and supportive of this decision.

The Board and staff of CHHSM know an Open and Affirming covenant may not be appropriate for all of our members. CHHSM’s Open and Affirming status does not mean our members will need to do the same. Fair and just employment policies are a foundation of all our members and we are proud of that. A move from employment policies of non-discrimination to acceptance, affirmation, and culture change is an important and powerful statement. During this process we have lifted up, and will continue to do so, the UCC motto of ‘Whoever you are or wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.’ We are very much looking forward to living out this covenant with you and growing in our ministry together.
